BREATH NATURE
Carry the joy of Canada Day through the entire month. This is a country blessed with stunning natural beauty and Leth-bridge is positioned perfectly to embrace it.  Our city is both divided and united by our river valley. The coulees slice the city in two, yet it is the river valley parks and trail systems that bring us back together and back to nature.  Plus, we’re at the centre of it all, equally close to badlands and mountains alike.

Coal Banks Trail  This interlinking series of trails unites the city with nature. Well-kept and wide, the regional pathway gets you from one side of town to the other to the other. Let’s get moving!
  • Start this 30 km trail on the west side then follow it through the coulees, up to Henderson Lake Park and on to Pavan Park on the north side. Now, what to do after lunch?

Henderson Lake Park  When not functioning as your #YQL Canada Day head-quarters (#YQLCDHQ?) Henderson Lake is the green lungs of the southside. Have a picnic, check out the Japanese Garden, or take to the swing set and touch the clouds!
  • Mayor Magrath Dr. and 6th & 9th Aves.

Indian Battle Park  The site of bloody Battle of the Belly River, the last major indigenous battle in Canada, is now a peace-ful place for families to picnic and play.  • Enter at Scenic Drive and 3 Ave. S.
  • 200 Indian Battle Road South

Nicholas Sheran Park  More than 7 KM of trails, a trout-stocked lake and the city’s disc golf course make this city park a source of fun for the whole family. Looking for a workout? The park hosts outdoor fitness classes and fitness equipment to get your heart pump-ing!
  • 245 McMaster Blvd West

Popson Park and Oldman River Observatory  Get down on the west side of town… down to the river, that is. Along with trails, this slice of coulee paradise offers an off-leash dog run, a picnic shelter and obser-vatory. You can also launch your boat here, just make sure to portage around the weir downstream.
  • Access from 10th Street West

Pavan Park  This north-side river valley park is not only beautiful and serene, it’s easily accessible by car. Horse trails, a picnic stand and tranquility — you need to get down here.
  • 80 62nd Avenue North

Hellen Schuler Nature Centre  Head beneath the bridge right to the heart of the Old-man River Valley, and see why tens of thousands of people visit this incredible nature centre. Discover the plants and wildlife native to this area and maybe do a little yoga on the living roof!
  • North end of Indian Battle Road South

Oldman River

Experience our river from a whole new angle — get on it! It’s true, most people have never been on the Old-man. Why not? Grab your life jacket, hop onto your inflatable start floating.

HUH? YOU WANT TO GO FOREST BATHING?

If you frequently flick through Instagram pics, or hang on Oprah’s every word, you’ve probably heard of ‘forest bathing.’ To those unfamiliar with the concept, forest bathing is (fully clothed) nature ther-apy, no stripping-off required!

This Japanese tradition of shinrin-yoku (森林浴 ) is the simple act of slowing down in nature to escape the hubbub of the city life. Retreat into the slow-ness and serenity of the living world and let the sounds, sights, smells of nature wash over you.

And good news, Lethbridge, you don’t need a forest to experience the benefits. Head down to the river valley and listen to the birdsong crescendo over the flow of the Oldman River. Give it a try — wash away your stress with some well-earned coulee calm.
