A Look Back At The 2018 Season

Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden was not graced with a visit by Japanese Royalty this season, and this was likely a welcome relief for the Garden's Executive Director, Michelle Day. But there were many events, programs, partnerships and milestones that are worth celebrating and reflecting upon. The 51st season of Nikka Yuko Centennial Garden was a great success. This was due to the hard work of our hosts and hostesses, the ever-attentive City of Lethbridge Garden Maintenance Team, and our generous volunteers. We are happy to report that nearly the same number of guests experienced the peace and serenity of Nikka Yuko this year as compared to the 50th anniversary. It is truly wonderful to see so many people connect or reconnect with Lethbridge civic garden and signature attraction.

The Garden would like to extend a special thank you to the Nikkei Cultural Society Minyo Dancers, Lethbridge Community Taiko Association, David Rathnow of Shin Ken Kai Iaido Dojo, the Southern Alberta Bonsai Society, HIBIKIYA, the Buddhist Temple of Southern Alberta, the University of Lethbridge and SACPA for your continued support this season.

This year marks 90 years of diplomatic relations between Japan and Canada (#JapanCanada90). Thank you Consulate General Mr. Kobayashi and staff at the Consulate for your support this season.
Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden and Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Garden in Dublic Ireland became sister gardens this year. Sláinte to our friends in Ireland!
Author Mark Sakamoto, Dr. Junichi Saga and Mizue Asai-Kauffman and band helped launch the garden signature autumn event, The Golden Maple Reception.
Other highlights include: performance by Lethbridge Shakespeare Performance Society, Sushi Off, Lethbridge Kendo Club, Nobuki Takamen Trio and exhibition Sugar Beets and Shortstops.
